    Sidney Poitier

     

    Sir Sidney Poitier is an American born Bahamian film director, author, actor and diplomat. He was born on February 20, 1927. He received an Academy Award for his work in the film ‘Lillies of the Field’. He is the first black man to receive such an award. In 1967, he had three films that became box office hits and made him the star of that year. In 1999, the American Film Institute rated him 22nd on the list of the Greatest Male Stars of All Time.

    He has been married twice and his current wife is Joanna Shimkus. He has six children. His acting career started in the year 1947 although he was an extra on the set. He landed his first role as himself in the documentary ‘From Whence Cometh My Help’. He was involved in various television shows, the last one being ‘The Last Brickmaker in America’.
